Clarke Makes National Team Debut

Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) and FC Santa Rosa goal scoring ace Keron Clarke made his T&T Senior National Team debut  against Ecuador on Wednesday 26 July in Guayaquil.

Ecuador were the victors on the night with a 3-1 win over the Dennis Lawrence coached outfit.

Clarke, who received his passport at the last minute to make the trip, started as the main striker in Lawrence’s 4-1-4-1 system against their South American opponents and but for the legs of Ecuador goalkeeper, Esteban Dreer, he would have marked his unexpected call up with a goal.

In the 66th minute, with the teams locked at 1-1, Hughton Hector played an intelligent pass into the path of Clarke. The 31 year old striker lost his marker and bared down on goal but Dreer reacted bravely to deny the attacker.

After the match, Lawrence told TTFA media, “When you get the opportunity to give people the chance to compete for places in your World Cup squad you need to use it. It was an experience for the debutants. ”

“I think it is another level to what they are used to but I thought they gave their best effort and hopefully it will give them an idea of what they need to  try and get their levels up to. The preparation is for Honduras and looking back at the game we learnt a lot about a lot of players, whether or not they are ready to push and vie for a spot in the team to play Honduras,” continued Lawrence.
