Prisons FC became the first team to be officially promoted to the Trinidad and Tobago Super League – League One on Saturday after a thrilling 4-2 victory at YTC Arouca against Petit Valley/Diego Martin Utd (PVDMU).
Prior to kick off, the match was set up as a winner take all encounter with either team assured of promotion if they could claim the valuable 3 points. Victory meant that either team would earn promotion for the first time in their respective club’s history.
With a chance at making history on the line, Prisons FC caught PVDMU flat footed in the 13th minute. Inform attacker Barry Carrington placed the ball beyond the PVDM custodian to set Prisons on their way.
Both teams continued to throw attacking jabs at each other throughout the first half but it was Carrington’s partner in crime, Ricardo Alleyne, who finally hit PVDMU with a sucker punch at the stroke of half time.
The tricky winger slammed home Prisons’ second and the men from Arouca felt like it would be their day of history making.
However, former national senior team midfielder Keron “Ballpest” Cummings had other ideas. 10 minutes into the second half, he conjured a reply for the visitors and it was game on!
Both teams then traded three goals in a frantic spell of attacking football. Aron Peters restored Prisons’ two goal cushion in the 71st minute but 19 year old Ishaq Abdullah, pulled one back again for PVDMU in the 80th, his 6th goal for the season.
Just when PVDMU might have thought that the momentum had shifted once again in their favour, up stepped Carrington to deliver the final nail in PVDMU coffin.
It was a bitter pill to swallow for Cummings and his team but fate is still in their own hands. A final day home victory over Harlem Strikers on Saturday 30 September would allow them to leapfrog Central 500 Spartans who currently sit in the second promotion spot but have already wrapped up their season.
And they certainly wrapped it up in style.
In their final match of the League Two season – they are on a bye for the final round – Central 500 Spartans walloped lowly Marabella FCC 13-1 at Edinburgh 500 Rec. Ground.
In the biggest margin of victory in any TTSL fixture this season, Josiah Grazette scored four and Amalis James notched 3 in the impressive rout for Central 500.
Captain Donovan Derrick scored one of only three goals registered in the first half, which puts him at the top of the goal scoring charts alongside Kevon Woodley with eight goals. Woodley has since transferred to Cunupia FC but continues to maintain his scoring touch in League One.
Without Woodley, a depleted Youth Stars outfit suffered a 3-2 defeat to Perseverance Ball Runners in Chaguanas in the other match-up on the day.
These results mean that Central 500 Spartans currently occupy second spot on 21 pts with Petit Valley/Diego Martin Utd trailing on 20 pts and Perseverance Ball Runners on 18 pts.
In the final day of action, PVDMU can win promotion and possibly the League Two crown itself if they defeat Harlem Strikers and Prisons FC suffer a loss to Youth Stars.
Anything less than a win for PVDMU however, would give Central 500 Spartans the coveted reward of promotion after the central based side emphatically boosted their goal difference against Marabella FCC.
